“Loxy”, the film by Dimitris Zachos and Thanasis Kafetzis that premiered at the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, winning the love of the audience as well as the Alpha Bank Accessibility Award, is a documentary about the first professional actress with Down syndrome in Greece. It is the story of Loxandra Lucas, a young woman and actress, who is actually claiming equal access to her life and to her art.
But what does this mean? While the conversation about inclusion and disability as a predominantly political issue is increasingly gaining space in public discourse, “Loxy” captures the important moment in which theory is put into practice, exclusion is abolished, and Loxandra becomes the first disabled person to perform as an actress on the stage of the National Theatre of Greece. A story narrated without taboos and clichés, which neither idealizes (normality) nor idealizes (disability), but just gives its protagonist the space and time to exist wherever and however she wishes, as should always be the case in a truly inclusive society.
